What to do the moment you notice data loss
Power the device off and leave it off. If a hard disk is clicking, beeping or grinding, every additional spin-up risks further platter damage. If you have accidentally deleted files, stop saving anything to that drive, because new writes overwrite the very sectors that still hold your files.
